Sand Storm in Turtle Bay

The day we had planned on leaving Turtle Bay (on a good weather forecast) a wicked sand storm blew in from the east. It lasted for two days and sand got into every nook and cranny on board.

One of our neighbors, who also didn't know what was coming, had secured his dinghy by simply hanging it from a halyard - something a lot of people do. Take a look at how his dinghy beats into this boat. Luckily, he was able to wrestle the dinghy aboard and secure it on deck before any damage occurred.

The video is a bit jumpy since our boat was moving around pretty good in the chop but it gives you a good idea on why not to do this.

  1. Wow, that looks intense! I guess we won't be suspending our dinghy from the halyard.

Did you get alot of sand inside the boat also? How do you clean the boat *mostly from sand and salt?

  3. Dani - that darn sand got everywhere. The boat looked like a sandpit. We just washed it like we would wash it to get the salt off. Problem was we didn't get to a marina where we could wash the boat until now so we to live with it. Not too bad inside since we kept everything closed.

Good to know it didn't get inside.

When we were at Burning Man the Dust got inside everything on the tent, nomatter if it was closed.

  5. Dani - I was at Burning Man in 1997! Those dust storms were crazy! I bet it we had been in town and not on the boat it would have been similar. The dust was so dense at times we couldn't see the coast.
